TOP UK PHYSICS DEPARTMENT

A thriving and growing Department, we aim to provide an academically stimulating and supportive environment for our students.

We offer a wide range of single and joint-honours degree programmes. A key feature of all our programmes is the opportunity for industrial placement or study abroad.

The excellence of the student experience has been endorsed by the National Student Survey, in which we have been the highest scoring Physics Department in three of the past seven years.

Research is largely focussed on theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics and nanoscience. The mix of full-time researchers, part-time international researchers and postgraduates has led to a lively and productive research environment.

According to RAE2008 15% of the research in the Department is world leading, and 85% is internationally recognised or better. The esteem sub-profile ranks 24% of the research in the Department as of world-leading esteem, placing the Department as equal fourth among Physics Departments in the UK for this indicator.
